EU and IOM Support Deployment of Video Control and License Plate Recognition System at Ukraine – Moldova Border
20 June 2024 – The international road border crossing points "Mogyliv-Podilskyi - Otaci" (Vinnytsia region) and "Mamalyha - Criva" (Chernivtsi region) are deploying the videocontrol and automated license plate recognition system (VICOS system). Its installation is a part of the regional project "EU4 Border Security", implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) through funding from the European Union.
The VICOS system will serve the needs of the State Customs Service of Ukraine and the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova. With advanced technologies for automated license plate capture and recognition, the system will facilitate the automation of border control processes.
Recently, representatives of the customs services of Ukraine and Moldova held technical consultations on integrating the license plates data from the VICOS into the existing automated information exchange. The launch of the VICOS system and the enhancement of information exchange will improve the level of interaction during joint control, promote transparency at the border, and prevent smuggling and other illegal actions.
