Korea and IOM Join Forces to Assist War-Affected People in Ukraine

IOM Ukraine Chief of Mission, Ms. Alessia Schiavon, and KOICA Country Director, Mr. Taekkeun Lee

Over 40,000 people will be able to benefit from a new project launched today, as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed an agreement in Kyiv. The three-year project will support 24 communities in Chernihiv, Kyiv, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions through social cohesion and recovery initiatives and targeted protection services for people in challenging life circumstances.

The project budget is USD 8.52 mln, of which USD 7.96 mln is KOICA’s contribution and USD 560,000 is co-funded by IOM. The planned activities will be implemented in coordination and partnership with the Government of Ukraine, including the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development (MinRestoration) and the Ministry of Social Policy.

To support Ukraine’s war-affected communities, IOM will conduct studies on the shifting gender and conflict dynamics, provide training to community initiative groups and civil society organizations, and facilitate dialogue on community development between key stakeholders including local and regional authorities, private sector and initiative groups. The latter will also receive in-kind and technical support to implement their community-driven recovery plans. About a thousand vulnerable individuals in challenging life circumstances will receive protection services through case management or referral to specialized assistance.

IOM will also conduct outreach and awareness-raising activities to improve access to relevant information on protection, including countering human trafficking, exploitation and gender-based violence.
